Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball holds off Peru State

Women's Basketball won a tight home contest Wednesday night.

The Ravens defeated the Peru State College Bobcats, 80-74, holding off every run made by the visitors.

Leading by 7 points heading into the fourth quarter, the Ravens withstood a resilient Bobcats club. Peru made just one 3-pointer in the first half of play, but knocked down nine from deep in the second half to make several runs at the Ravens lead.

One of those 3-pointers cut it to a 48-47 game early in the fourth quarter, but baskets by Riley Bruggeman and Diana Mozer helped give the Ravens some breathing room.

The Bobcats again cut into the Ravens lead with a little over 5 minutes to play, but Kelli Storck answered with an old-fashioned 3-point play. With just over 2 minutes to play, another PSC 3-pointer cut the Ravens lead to 2 points, but Bruggeman answered by making all three free throws after being fouled on a shot attempt.

Free throws came up big down the stretch as the Ravens shot 16-of-19 from the line to hold on for the 6-point win.

Bruggeman and Oen Deters each scored 21 points and dished out 5 assists to lead the Ravens, with Kelli Storck adding 17 and Nicole Storck scoring 12 points. Deters added 5 steals and shot 4-8 from the 3-point line.

The Ravens trailed 10-8 late in the first quarter but scored the final 5 points of the frame to take a 13-10 lead. They extended that run another 10 points to open the second quarter and pushed their lead to 23-10.

The Bobcats answered to close out the second quarter, cutting the Ravens lead to 6 points before Bruggeman sank a pair of free throws to give the Ravens a 29-21 lead at the break.

Deters notched 10 points to lead all scorers in the opening 20 minutes.

The Bobcats cut the Ravens 8-point halftime lead down to just 1 point, 42-41, late in the third quarter. However, the Ravens answered with a 6-0 run to push their lead back out to 48-41 heading into the final quarter as Deters scored a basket and made a free throw after being fouled, then Bruggeman drilled a 3-pointer prior to the clock expiring. Keeping the Bobcats at arm's reach proved to be a theme in the final quarter as the Ravens held on for the win.

The Ravens (11-5, 7-1 Heart) will hit the road for their next game, a 12 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10 contest at Clarke University.
