MARSHALL, Mo. – Thursday night's road match-up between (RV) Benedictine Women's Basketball and Missouri Valley went back and forth until the Vikings took control in the third quarter.
Missouri Valley held Benedictine to just 7 points in the third quarter en route to a 62-54 win to split the regular-season series with the Ravens
A 3-pointer from Josie Weishaar midway through the first quarter pushed Benedictine in front by 4 points, but that was the largest lead for either team in the first quarter. A jumper from Missouri Valley with 31 seconds remaining in the quarter pushed the Vikings in front, 16-14, headed to the second quarter.
After three lead changes and three ties to open the second quarter, Missouri Valley pulled ahead by 5 points. Benedictine closed the half on a 10-6 run that erased their deficit and put them in front 35-32 at the half. The run started with baskets from Jennifer Jacobs, Riley Rottinghaus, and Nicole Storck before a pair of 3-pointers from Lauryn Dubbert pushed the Ravens lead to 5.
Missouri Valley limited Benedictine to three field goals in the third quarter as they outscored the Ravens 15-7 to take a 5-point lead, 47-42, into the fourth quarter.
The Vikings maintained their lead throughout the fourth quarter. A jumper from Jacobs with just over six minutes remaining, followed by a layup 45 seconds later pulled Benedictine within 3 points twice but that was all the closer the Ravens got as the Vikings sealed the win from the charity stripe, hitting five free throws in the final 35 seconds of the game.
Jacobs and Dubbert finished with 14 points each for the Ravens as they were the only two to finish in double figures.
Benedictine is tied with Grand View University for second place in the Heart Standings but has the head-to-head advantage. The two teams will close out the regular season in Atchison on Feb. 22.
The Ravens remain on the road for their next two games, traveling to Oskaloosa, Iowa, on Saturday for a 2 p.m. game with William Penn University before a midweek match-up with Baker on Feb. 19 in Baldwin City, Mo., at 5:30 p.m.
