HONOLULU, Hawaii – Benedictine Women's Basketball split a pair of games at the 2024 Hoops in Hawaii Classic on Thursday and Friday.
Thursday morning they fell to Hastings College 59-46 and then they wrapped up the trip with a strong 75-49 win over College of St. Mary on Friday afternoon.
In the loss to Hastings, the Broncos held the Ravens to just 7 points in the second quarter after the Ravens held as much as an 8-point lead during the first quarter before taking a 17-11 lead into the second quarter.
Even with the low-scoring quarter, Benedictine held the lead through the first 8 minutes of the quarter. Hastings limited Benedictine to two field goals over the final 4 minutes of the half - a jumper from Lauryn Dubbert and a second from Riley Bruggeman. The Broncos outscored the Ravens 9-2 over the final 4 minutes of the half to take a 26-24 lead into the second half.
Hasting's offensive run continued into the third quarter as they opened the quarter with 7 straight points to pull ahead 33-24. Kennedy Nicholson scored the Ravens first basket of the quarter, a 3-pointer, to pull Benedictine back within 6 points.
Hastings combined to outscore Benedictine 34-17 in the second and third quarters, allowing them to take control of the game over the 10 minutes.
Riley Rottinghuas cut the Ravens fourth-quarter deficit down to 5 points midway through the quarter, but that was all the Ravens could get as the Broncos kept the Ravens at arm's length.
Dubbert was the lone Raven in double figures with 14 points as they finished hitting 34.6 percent from the floor and 28 percent from beyond the arc.
In the win over College of St. Mary, Benedictine held the Stars in check in the second quarter.
Benedictine turned a tie at 18 after the first quarter into a 35-26 at the half after holding St. Mary to just 8 points in the third quarter.
The Ravens combined to outscore St. Mary 38-19 over the second and third quarters to take command of the game heading into the fourth quarter.
The Flames closed with 15 points early in the fourth quarter but a free throw followed by a layup on the next possession from Jennifer Jacobs pushed Benedictine back ahead by 21 points, 62-41. By the fourth quarter media timeout, a pair of layups from Dubbert pushed Benedictine to its largest lead at 23 points.
Jaylee Christian connected on a 3-pointer in the game's final minute to push Benedictine's lead to its largest of the game at 27, before the Flames made the final basket to close the Ravens final lead to 26.
Dubbert finished the game with 20 points, followed by Jacobs with 18.
Benedictine returns to action after the start of the new year on Jan. 2, hosting a 5:30 p.m. game with William Penn University back inside the Ralph Nolan Gymnasium.
