Charles Gartenmayer

Until the 2012 season, defensive coordinator and secondary coach Charlie Gartenmayer ’75 was part of a unique record at Benedictine. As a member of the 1974 Raven defense, he helped guide the unit to a top-ranking in the NAIA, surrendering just 164.7 yards per game. That same defense held the record for fewest first downs allowed in a game at five until the unit led by Coach Gartenmayer broke the record in the first two games of the 2012 season, pushing the record to three.

Since 1979, defensive coordinator Charlie Gartenmayer has served alongside Coach Wilcox. He retired from 22 years of service in the Atchison public school system in spring 2007. After enjoying a brief retirement, he took over as Benedictine’s Athletic Director in fall 2007. Coach Gartenmayer is one of two current Raven assistants honored for their roles as an assistant coach when he was named the AFCA-NAIA Assistant Coach of the Year in 2000.
