Benedictine Baseball wrapped up its opening weekend of Heart play on Saturday with a sweep over William Woods to take the series 3-1 over the Owls.
Two the Ravens three wins were anchored by complete games on the hill, as Parish Beagle earned the win with a complete game in game one, 3-2 and Scott Matzke earned a complete-game win in game three, 6-0.
Game 1: Benedictine 3, William Woods 2
Benedictine plated three runs over the first two innings and that was all they needed in support of Beagle, who finished with 7 strikeouts. He scattered 2 runs off 4 hits over 7 innings to improve to 3-1 on the season.
Carson Hintz, Daniel Ornelas and Matthew Johnson recorded an RBI each while Brice Martin and Bryan Haas each added a double at the plate in the win.
Game 2: William Woods 5, Benedictine 3
The Owls scored three runs in the top of the first and then added 2 more in the third off Nic Mozingo to earn the win and split the Friday doubleheader.
Mozingo finished with 3 strikeouts, while giving up 1 earned run off 4 hits over 7 innings in the loss.
Martin and Hintz both went 2 for 3 at the plate with Martin recording an RBI.
Game 3: Benedictine 6, William Woods 0
Scott Matzke picked up a complete-game shutout in the first game on Saturday on the hill for the Ravens. He scattered 4 hits over 7 innings with 7 strikeouts as the Ravens won the opener on Saturday.
The Ravens finished with 3 extra base hits at the plate. Hintz connected on a 3-run home run in the bottom of the first while Korey Messick and Johnson added a double each with Messick and Jackson Stone added the final 3 RBI.
Game 4: Benedictine 7, William Woods 1
The Ravens closed out the series with a 6-run win to clinch the first Heart series of the season.
Ryan McDougal earned the start on the hill, throwing 5 innings with 6 strikeouts while allowing 3 hits. McDougal was credited with the win after Ethan Arnold and Ben Bowman threw an inning each to close out the game for the Ravens.
Martin, Hintz, Haas and Messick finished the game with 2 hits each while Messick recorded a triple and 3 RBI. Martin, Hointz and Michael McCavitt added an RBI each to round out the Ravens efforts at the plate.
Benedictine remains at home for its next Heart series, hosting Missouri Valley College on Laughlin Field at Olsen Stadium on March 21-22.
