Benedictine College Athletic Director Charlie Gartenmayer has announced that head men's soccer coach John Sosa has stepped down from his position with the Ravens.
"We want to thank John for everything that he has put into the men's soccer program during his time at Benedictine," Gartenmayer said. "He took over the program initially on an interim basis, but quickly proved that he was equipped to lead the program during his time at Benedictine. He understands fully what it means to be a Raven and we wish him the best as he moves into the next phase of his career."
Coach Sosa took over the program in 2018 as the interim head coach after serving as the assistant coach for the 2017 season. He guided the program to the Heart Postseason Tournament in 5 of his 7 seasons as head coach, including the Covid season of 2020 when the program played it's complete schedule in the fall and continued with an additional schedule and the Heart Postseason tournament during the Spring semester.
"As I transition away from my role, my heart is overflowing with profound gratitude for every person who made this chapter of my life so meaningful," Sosa said. "To President Steve Minnis, Athletic Director Charlie Gartenmayer and the rest of the administration department – thank you for the extraordinary opportunity and trust you placed in me. President Minnis, your visionary leadership and unwavering belief in what we could achieve opened this door and inspired growth across the entire campus. Charlie, your long-term of selfless dedication, wisdom, and deep love for Benedictine is contagious and pushed me to lead with purpose. Your support has been one of the greatest gifts of my career.
"This journey has been one of deep personal and professional growth – teaching me humility, patience, leadership through service, and the beauty of building something greater than any one person or season. The bonds we formed, the lessons we learned, and the faith we lived out together will remain in my soul forever. Though my time on the sideline ends here, my gratitude and pride in being part of the Benedictine family never will. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for letting me be your coach."
Under Coach Sosa, the Ravens earned 17 All-Heart Selections and 12 NAIA Scholar Athlete selections. The Men's Soccer program was consistently among the group of Raven Athletic programs honored as NAIA Scholar Teams.
A national search will be conducted to find the next head coach for Benedictine Men's Soccer.Â
