Women's Basketball nearly knocked off one of the top teams in the country on Wednesday night.
The Ravens lost, 80-77 in overtime, to the No. 12 MidAmerica Nazarene University Pioneers.
A back-and-forth battle saw both teams hold leads in the fourth quarter. A Pioneer free throw with 20 seconds tied the game at 69-69. With the final possession, the Ravens had a good look at a game-winner, but
Riley Bruggeman's jumper went halfway in before popping back out, sending the game to overtime.
Kelli Storck's basket with 1:40 to play in overtime gave the Ravens a 77-75 lead, but it turned out to be the final points of the game for the home team. The Pioneers scored the final 5 points of the contest, sealing the game by stealing a Ravens inbounds pass with just 3 seconds left on the clock.
Storck led all scorers with 23 points in the game, and grabbed 6 rebounds.
Addie Kane had 15 points,
Riley Bruggeman scored 12 and added 8 assists, and
Oen Deters had 8 points and 7 assists.
The Ravens started the game hot on the offensive end, scoring 10 points in the paint in the opening minutes. However, the MNU defense quickly focused on eliminating quality paint touches for the Ravens and the Benedictine offense struggled to hit jump shots.
The Pioneers held a 16-14 lead after the opening period, then pushed their lead to 36-20 thanks to a 10-0 run in the second quarter.
Lilly Martin's 3-pointer snapped the MNU run and started one for the Ravens as they rattled off 8-straight points to bring the Pioneers lead back to single digits late in the first half. MNU scored the final 3 points of the opening half to take a 39-28 lead into the break.
The Ravens came out on a mission in the third quarter, playing well at both ends of the court, outscoring the Pioneers 22-11 in the period. The defense held the Pioneers without a point for nearly 6 minutes of action while the offense chipped away at the MNU lead.
Hattie Gros knocked in a jump shot that tied the game at 46-46 with 2:00 minutes to play in the quarter, and the teams went into the final quarter all squared at 50-50, setting the stage for a tight finish to the game.
The Ravens (4-3, 1-1 Heart) will start a road trip with a 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22 game at Culver-Stockton College.
