Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball held off by MNU Pioneers

Women's Basketball couldn't overcome a hot MidAmerica Nazarene University at home on Saturday afternoon.

The (RV) Ravens lost to the (14) Pioneers 65-49 in the Heart Women's Basketball Game of the Week. MNU moves to an unblemished 17-0 in Heart of America play.

The Ravens made runs at the Pioneers in the second half, but MNU had an answer each time. The Ravens seemed to get some momentum going late in the third quarter after the Pioneers had built a 17-point lead, 43-26, with just under 3 minutes to play in the period. Kennedy Nicholson hit a pair of 3-pointers and Jennifer Jacobs scored inside to cut the MNU lead to 11 points. However, the Pioneers made a free throw and a buzzer-beater 3-pointer to push their lead back to 15 points heading into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Ravens made another run at the MNU lead. Josie Weishaar hit a 3-pointer, Carmen Morales scored inside, then Weishaar and Jacobs had back-to-back buckets to cut the Pioneers lead to 55-45. But, like the third quarter, MNU had an answer, this time with two 3-pointers, to push its lead back to 16 points and went on to win by the same amount.

Weishaar scored a team-high 14 points. She was joined in double figures by Lauryn Dubbert, who scored 10 points to go along with 9 rebounds. Jacobs had 6 points and 4 boards, and Morales had 6 rebounds to go with 4 points.

The high-energy first half saw the Ravens enter the locker room down 29-21 after 20 minutes of play. The Ravens matched the Pioneers at 33% shooting from the field and outrebounded MNU 22-17, but turnovers played a big difference in the score. The Ravens turned the ball over 13 times in the opening half with the Pioneers turning that into 13 points on the other end of the court.

The Pioneers ended the game shooting 44.4% and the Ravens closed out at 40.4% from the field.

The Ravens (15-4, 12-3 Heart) will try to bounce back Wednesday, Jan. 29 at Graceland.
