Volleyball picked up a sweet Senior Night win Tuesday in Atchison.
The Ravens earned a season sweep against the Baker University Wildcats, winning 3-1.
In the deciding fourth set, the Ravens faced a 22-20 deficit late but rallied back for the win. The 5-0 rally started with a service error by the Wildcats, their 20th of the night, which was followed by three-straight kills from Regan Bruggeman. Mary Pat Taylor put the finishing touches on the match with a kill to give the Ravens a 25-22 set win, and a 3-1 match win.
Taylor finished with a team-high 11 kills to go along with 10 digs. Bruggeman had 9 kills and 4 blocks, Maura Lickteig was strong in the middle with 9 kills and 6 blocks, and Sabrina Oncins had 9 kills and 4 digs. Rounding out the Ravens attack was Haylie Dickerson's 6 kills, and 5 kills by Joslyn Lewis.
The Ravens had 9 blocks as a team and just 1 service error compared to the Wildcats 20.
The first set was evenly matched most of the way as the teams were tied at 7-7, 11-11, 16-16, and 19-19. However, the Ravens finished with a flurry, scoring the final 6 points to take the first set 25-19.
Oncins had a kill to give the Ravens their first lead of the set at 17-16, and it was Regan Bruggemann's kill that gave the Ravens the winning point in the first set.
The second set followed the same script as the first. The teams remained tight throughout most of the set and the Ravens held a 21-20 lead late. Like the first set, the Ravens used a final scoring run, this time 4 points, to win the set 25-20 and take a 2-0 lead in the match. Once again, Bruggemann had the set-winning kill for the Ravens.
Through two sets, the visitors gave the Ravens plenty of help by recording 10 service errors.
The third set mirrored the first two in all ways except the most crucial one – it was the visiting Wildcats that put together a late 5-0 scoring run to win the set 25-21, cutting the Ravens match lead to 2-1.
The Wildcats threatened to push the match to five sets by taking a late lead in the fourth, but the 5-point rally by the Ravens earned a win for the home team.
The Ravens improve to 15-14 overall and 9-10 in Heart of America play. The Heart Postseason Conference tournament will begin Saturday with the Ravens on the road. Check www.ravenathletics.com for information on the Ravens opponent and match time.
