LAMONI, Iowa – Graceland University limited the Raven Women's Basketball team to just nine points in the second quarter on Saturday. In the end, Benedictine (5-6, 2-5 Heart) wasn't able to overcome that deficit as the Yellowjackets earned a 61-53 win over the Ravens.
The Ravens trailed by one point after the first quarter. In the second quarter, Graceland limited Benedictine to just three field goals and two free throws which allowed the Yellowjackets to push their advantage to 12 by halftime.
Benedictine outscored Graceland 30-26 in the second half, which included a 14-11 advantage in the fourth quarter, but just couldn't battle back from their slow second quarter.
The Ravens used a 11-0 fourth-quarter run to erase a 13-point deficit to pull within four points on a basket from Ali Brzozowski with 33 seconds left in the game. That was all the closer they would get as Graceland went 4 for 4 at the free throw line over the final 19 seconds of the game to earn the eight-point win.
Brzozowski finished with a team-high 15 points and eight rebounds as she anchored the Ravens bench scoring effort that finished with a 24-10 advantage. Kayla Staley added nine points and seven rebounds while Rachel Baumgartner added 11 rebounds. Benedictine finished the game with a 51-35 advantage on the boards.
The Ravens travel to Hawaii for a pair of games to close out the first semester. They take on John Brown University on Tuesday and Rio Grande on Wednesday.
