Women's Basketball earns 13-point win in Holiday Inn Express Classic opener

The No. 22-ranked Raven Women's Basketball team picked up a 13-point win over No. 25 Lindenwood-University Belleville on Friday night as they opened the Holiday Inn Express Classic with a 63-50 win over the Lynx.

Benedictine (3-0) limited Lindenwood-Belleville (0-2) to just 14 points in the first half just seven field goals as they opened 24-point lead by halftime.

The Ravens forced the Lynx into 15 first-half turnovers in the first half. Benedictine finished the game with a 24-12 advantage in points off turnovers as they forced Lindenwood-Belleville into a total of 19 turnovers.

After trading baskets to start the game, and trailing briefly, Benedictine went on a 21-0 run to turn a 4-4 tie into a 21-6 lead with 38 seconds left to play in the first quarter. A pair of 3-pointers from Grace Brzozowski and Zeynep Canbaz sparked the Ravens run.

Skylar Washington scored the Ravens final basket of the second quarter to give Benedictine its largest of the half at 24 as they headed into halftime with a 38-14 lead.

Lindenwood-Belleville pulled within 14 points in the third quarter but couldn't get any closer as the Ravens extended their lead back to 16 on a basket by Natalie Smaron to give the Ravens a 49-33 lead with just the fourth quarter remaining.

After pulling ahead by 18 early in the fourth quarter, the Ravens saw their lead trimmed to as little as 11 points, but that was all the closer the Lynx would get as the Ravens moved on to earn the 13-point win.

Four Ravens reached double figures, paced by 13 of Canbaz. Ali Brzozowski was next with 12 off the bench while Smaron added 11 with seven rebounds. Grace Brzozowski finished with 10 as she led the Ravens with two 3-pointers.

Benedictine returns to Dugan Jones Court at 3 p.m. today to take on Southwest Christian University. SCU lost their Classic opener to No. 12 MNU, 76-53, on Friday night.
